Little Legends Lemonade Ep 04: When a Mother's Instinct Changed Everything
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A kid goes from running everywhere to barely being able to walk, and the first answers don’t point to cancer at all. That is the gut punch at the center of our conversation with Kim and her son, Max, as they walk us through the real timeline from “maybe it’s a sports injury” to a leukemia diagnosis and two and a half years of treatment. If you’ve ever felt dismissed by “normal” tests while your instincts say something is wrong, you’ll hear exactly why persistence matters and how fast life can change for a family facing pediatric cancer.
We get specific about what treatment looked like: intense pain, bone damage, spinal taps, anesthesia choices, and the brutal personality shifts that can come with steroids. Max shares the kid view with surprising wisdom, including how he handled fear and why recording a quick video after a procedure helped his future self stay calm. We also talk about school dynamics, what it feels like when someone says something cruel, and the small acts of protection and friendship that can make a hospital season less isolating.
Then we turn that hard-earned perspective into action. We’re inviting you to Little Legends Lemonade at Tupelo Honey on Lane Avenue on August 2nd from 11 to 1 to raise money for Cancer Free Kids, because research funding is how we get more effective and gentler treatments for children with cancer. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more people show up for families who need it.

Meet The Family Behind The Stand
Keri CroftHey there, you beautiful badass. Welcome to the Carrie Croft Show. Hi, Max. Welcome to the Carrie Croft Show. Thank you. I feel like he's like, I think. Who is this? Who is this woman that is upon me? Hi, Penelope. Oh, wait a minute. All of a sudden we got a little bit quiet. But guess what? I have proof because this has been running for the last 15 minutes to see you. I think she'll she'll warm up. And Kim, welcome to the show. Thank you for having us. You know, I am just I am honored that you guys have taken time out of your day for little old moi. Yeah.
Planning Little Legends Lemonade
Keri CroftNow, Max, do you know what we're doing for cancer-free kids in August? I'm gonna educate you. Okay. So Little Legends Lemonade is a lemonade stand that we've created. This is our third year that we've been doing this. So all the little kids get their shirts on, get their entrepreneurial hats on, they're giving hats, and they have fun, and we've done it in front of my house for the last two years. And now this place called Tupelo Honey on Lane has been kind enough to say, we would like to give you our entire patio on Lane Avenue to raise money for this amazing cause. Is that exciting?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
Keri CroftSo I'm gonna ask you this because you're cool. I'm gonna show this to you. Do you think I should get this? I'm going back and forth on whether or not I should buy this for the lemonade stand and have an adult. I I might have a couple of these, they're not very expensive.
SPEAKER_02Oh can it be me?
Keri CroftCould you would you do it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you'd wear it?
Keri CroftCan I be?
SPEAKER_02I definitely do it.
Keri CroftSo these are like adult costumes. And so what we like to do is we wanna we wanna maximize the idea that we're on Lane Avenue, right? Because there's a lot of eyeballs, hearts, feet. There's people everywhere. And so the more signs we can create and the more ruckus we can create, and you know what that's called? It's called gorilla marketing. Oh. I'm gonna teach you a little business, little business here too. So the more we make a hot, you know, make a ruckus on Lane, the more somebody who's like driving home from Whole Foods with their organic produce, they'll say, Oh, wait, what is this lemonade stand you speak of? And we'll say, Well, we're raising five grand in two hours for cancer-free kids. Stop and give us some money. Give us some coins. Do you think that's too lofty of a goal?
SPEAKER_02No.
Keri CroftI think we can do it, don't you? We got an incredible, I mean, the community always shows up and shows out, right? And you're gonna you're gonna be a big part of right now helping, you know, helping to get people into their purses, if you will. So welcome. What'd you say?
SPEAKER_02I can be a lemon, right?
Keri CroftUh you can be whatever you want that day. Are you gonna come?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
Keri CroftAre you guys coming?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Good. Well, uh, my dad's birthday is the day after, so I wasn't, we're it's the 70th. Oh, yeah. But it might be the following weekend.
The Road To A Leukemia Diagnosis
Keri CroftTell us a little bit about your story.
SPEAKER_02Like, what about it though?
Keri CroftWell, okay, Kim, do you want to tee it up? Yeah. We'll let your mom we'll let your mom tee it up, and then you can kind of add in, and then I think you'll get to flow after that.
SPEAKER_05Well, do you want to start with how old you were? So it was right seven? Yeah, it was right before his eighth birthday. Um he was diagnosed with leukemia about two weeks before. But we were kind of had like a run-up of not feeling very well and body pain and trying to figure things out.
SPEAKER_02Because of football.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because of football, we were kind of we kind of thought sports were the problem. But he was diagnosed with leukemia uh after a couple tests, thinking it was a bone infection, a bone marrow biopsy, and and all of that. So that kicked off two and a half years of treatment.
SPEAKER_02Some no, but before that, someone said it was just gas.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. It was gas. It was it was a football injury. Right.
Keri CroftWell, usually it's you know that you don't jump straight to cancer, you diagnose all the other things that possibly could be. But what were you feeling at the time? Were you just feeling tired? Like what was happening?
SPEAKER_02Chill.
Keri CroftChill?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like laid back.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. So you were but like sitting on the couch a lot, not really doing anything. Like he was a kid that normally like ran everywhere that he went, you know. You couldn't get him to just walk anywhere. He was jogging everywhere he went, and then he was he went from that to uh just sitting on the couch all day and watching TV. And well, he didn't start Fortnite until after you got sick, but yeah. So he just stopped moving around as much. And then uh and he was just tired. And we were trying to because he he they thought that he like pulled something in his hip. Go ahead, talk.
SPEAKER_02Well, you have to finish your sentence.
SPEAKER_05So he thought something that he pulled something.
Keri CroftI'll tell you what, this age, I'll tell you, I've got a I've got a seven almost eight-year-old who's already starting this stuff with me. I'm gonna tell you something.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna tell you these kids. Yeah, yeah. That's uh he usually is like, Mom, tell dad what happened today. And I'm like, you tell him. And he's like, no, you tell him. So then I start. And then it's like, why can't I tell him? Yeah, he's like, Oh, you're not saying it right. Yeah, yeah. But uh they thought it was uh he like pulled a muscle, and then we got x-rays and imaging and blood tests, and the blood tests were all fine, um, which really made us not think that it was anything cancer related, and then uh just more pain, more pain.
SPEAKER_02And then one morning he sneezed in the shower and just Oh yeah, but that happened again in when I was outside.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and just fell to his knees, like couldn't catch his breath. He was in so much pain. And then he uh didn't walk on his own after that for another two months because he was just in so much pain. He had a small fracture in his spine just from and from the leukemia cells um building up inside of his bones. Um, and his the inside of one side of his pelvis was like really um there's bits of bone in his marrow just from all of the cells kind of trying to break his bones from the inside.
SPEAKER_02So thinking about when I sneezed and hurt my back, whenever I was in school, um like after that, I kept on saying banana so I wouldn't sneeze.
Keri CroftYeah. Did it work? Yeah, yeah, it does. So when you when you were diagnosed with cancer, did people were people at school like did they were they nice and kind and did they act like were you just feeling weird or were you feeling normal? Or how did that feel?
SPEAKER_02Well, some of my friends were like protecting me, but then some of them were just like treating me like an average kid, and then um there was like this one kid name Oh you don't have to say his name.
SPEAKER_05But we'll we'll edit his name.
SPEAKER_02Um well I just okay, it's just a kid. And um he called me um when I was gone in the hospital. He called me a little cancer freak because like he I got to skip school.
SPEAKER_04That's not very good.
SPEAKER_02He was jealous, and then um he got expelled and I didn't I never s I've never seen him again. Wow. Yeah, I haven't seen him since.
SPEAKER_05But your friends kind of uh told him what was up, huh? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know, I wasn't there. Yeah, I'd have been lying.
Keri CroftYeah, your your your crew handled it, put it that way. Yeah, yeah. So for you though, as a mom, when you the reality set in, and it's like it's not the 20 other things that we that we thought, and it's this, yeah, and I can't control this for my kid. Yeah. What I mean It was just devastating.
SPEAKER_05Um I I had a cousin that had a kid that had uh leukemia as well, and I thought that was the last thing that could happen to us because how could it strike twice in one family? Um but it did, and I mean that was kind of naive of me to think that. But I just was grieving so much for his childhood, you know, just all of the stuff that the path that we thought we were on. He was uh playing football, he just joined a travel baseball team, and um I just knew that wasn't a possibility anymore. And he really loved to play those sports, and I just didn't know what his childhood would look like um in the beginning. But I think we have we've kind of we've come back.
SPEAKER_02I'm now just remembering how like how much money we spent on like toys. Yeah,
Treatment, Fear, Bribes, And Siblings
SPEAKER_02yeah.
SPEAKER_05So it was like try to find any kind of joy you can, but we were really limited on what we we couldn't go out and do things or you know, be in public very much because of his compromised immune system. Uh so you know, we were kind of correcting that um, you know, happiness is buying things.
Keri CroftWell, you wanted to you you probably were trying to do everything you could to to take it away, right? You know, and just try to I I I can only imagine what I would be doing in that scenario.
SPEAKER_05Yep, and you're just he's you know, you're so bored, and then you're and then you're why why us? Why is this happening? And then you're just trying to, yeah, just bring any joy you can into the family. And that meant buying things because it wasn't experiences really. So and then we also had to bribe him for treatment too.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Yeah, we had a whole pay whole pay structure. My dad said when I got um spinolaps, he'd give me a hundred dollars if I um didn't go under, and then somehow I got him to give me three hundred.
SPEAKER_05Oh well, because you're on the table and they're telling you that you have to be still, and you're like, no, no, no, and you're negotiating. You're like, I'll do it for 200.
SPEAKER_02No, I negotiated.
SPEAKER_05That's a good that's actually you had a lot of leverage.
SPEAKER_02I negotiated before I said 300, and then he said sure, and then I said 350, and then he said 300, and I was like, and then and I was like, okay.
Keri CroftYeah. Were you so were you so scared when you had to do that?
SPEAKER_02After the first one, not really. Well, it was I equate the first one and then a few times after that. It wasn't like I wasn't really scared, but then after not doing it for a while, yeah. Kind of got Yeah, have you had a chunk of time in between?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah, because you go in the beginning it's like once every week or every ten days. Um, but he was under anesthesia for those, and then once it was once a month or once every three months, then he was able to be awake for those just to reduce the amount of anesthesia events. Um, you know, because 20 in a couple of months was a lot. Uh, but I equate trying to talk him into uh getting a spinal tap just be to be ready for it, you know, because you can't be wiggling, they can't hold you down. Yeah, and you have to be in like a certain position.
SPEAKER_02Like a week before my mom always made me sleep, or like whenever I decided to lay down in like where the position I had to be in a spinal tap, which I didn't really understand.
SPEAKER_05We were just practicing.
SPEAKER_02Well, that doesn't make sense.
SPEAKER_05Holding your knees in. I mean, it might not make sense now, but it didn't, it didn't do anything. You don't think it helped? No We tried. I mean we do what we can, kid. We do what we can. I just I equated it to trying to convince him to just jump off a building. Like that's what you're you know, he is so nervous and scared. No, but that's what I mean. You were just so scared and nervous, and we're trying to calm you down and telling you to do this really scary thing.
Keri CroftNote to everyone Max was not scared, okay?
SPEAKER_05He was not scared at all. Nervous, more just nervous. They're putting a needle in your spine. Mom, you're cooked. It makes sense, yeah.
Keri CroftIt makes sense that you would be in your pride.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Okay.
Keri CroftHey Penelope, how did you feel when you found out all this out about your brother? You can talk.
SPEAKER_02No, she thought, she th thought, um, well, it was hard for her because I was getting all the attention.
Keri CroftLet's just come out with the real facts. Okay, I like that you're giving us the real facts here.
SPEAKER_02And then she was kind of sad.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02She didn't ever cry. Did she cry?
SPEAKER_05Well, I think in the beginning, she took it. Yeah. You're like, you you just think Yeah, she wasn't she didn't get quite the weight of it, but she talked to her teachers a lot. She was in first grade and Max was in second. So she talked to her teachers a lot, and they uh would always comment just how well she coped with it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or no, not before? Didn't Luna die or something?
SPEAKER_05Oh, that was that summer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we had a Did I beat cancer before?
SPEAKER_05Before that, yeah, before that. Oh, okay. Yeah. Our dog. We had a dog that passed away. And it was Penelope's three Bestie. So yeah, she went through a lot.

SPEAKER_05She did not. I know. Where did this that's not what we're here to talk about?
SPEAKER_02You brought Ms. Clifford up because she gave no wait.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I'm confused. So, but uh we really try to keep Penelope close during everything. We had a lot of friends that, you know, they're like offered to have Penelope come stay with them. My family, you know, offered Aunt Sabrina.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. She gave her the big seal thing.
SPEAKER_05Yep. And my sister, you know, said that she could stay with her for a couple of weeks. But we thought it was really important to not let her feel like she was on the outside of all of it and just shipped off because we had this really hard thing to do. Um, and I know that can't work for everybody, but it really worked for us to just kind of my husband and I took turns in the hospital. Shush. Took turns in the hospital. You know, my husband would stay and I would be home with her, and then we'd uh switch.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you always used to bring me a cheap. But it worked well for us.
SPEAKER_05What is it?
SPEAKER_02Mac and cheese and I I eat mac and cheese and then I put peas in them. Oh, that's uh yeah.
Keri CroftHave you ever eaten mac and cheese with ketchup? Oh, it's delicious. You gotta get the box mac and cheese and macaroni because ketchup. Penelope, what do you eat with ketchup?
SPEAKER_02Apples and pizza.
Why Cancer Free Kids Matters
Keri CroftOh yeah. So Kim, yes, now that you've gone through this and you understand what Cancer Free Kids does, you know, like maybe talking to someone out there who doesn't have, has never experienced this, yeah, but yet can you know, we would like to compel people not to scroll when they see the word cancer, like child cancer, stay in this, listen to the stories, and like what they're doing is so important because they're getting the early stage, you know, scientific, the this the smart people that are making shit happen. Oops, I said I said the S-word. You know, so it's so important, right? So, but from your perspective, why is it so important? I just think they're changing the game.
SPEAKER_02I think the way to hook them is like it's to say your kid could get cancer.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's well, we're not gonna deep. Yeah, we're not gonna not scare tactics, but I just think I think they're changing the game. I mean, they're making a lot of advances and giving a lot more kids a chance to go through treatment successfully and effectively and hopefully more gentler because it was pretty rough on you. Gentler?
SPEAKER_02It is gentle ear.
SPEAKER_05It's gentle ear.
SPEAKER_02Did you get pretty pretty much did you get pretty sick? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But then I found a friend named Darius when I was up there.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. In the hospital. Yeah. That made it better? Yeah. A lot better. Did you guys hang out?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a lot. We hung out.
SPEAKER_05And they played video games together a lot. He lived in West Virginia, so but he was being treated in children's.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't. Um, I was watching. I used to watch um this like YouTubers member the the son and the son and the dad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Undoing toys and like and if I laughed it hurt, so we had to turn it off. And then I couldn't laugh. And then I had to figure out how to laugh again.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you forgot. So steroids are just really they're a beast. I I think they're just as rough as chemo. Um and they're really hard. But they kind of just changed. Oh, that wasn't a steroid. That wasn't a steroid. That was a mover.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_05Don't say anything. Don't say anything more. Okay. But steroid, anyway, so they just like kind of changed his whole personality. They and he didn't laugh for uh like six weeks. And then when he seems fine, yeah, now yeah. But then when he got off steroids, he tried to laugh for the first time and he had to almost figure out how to do it again.
Keri CroftShow us. So, Max, in all seriousness, first of all, what would you say to another child right now who's going through cancer, who's where you were, and maybe needs a little word of encouragement or two?
SPEAKER_02Um I don't know.
SPEAKER_05You don't know, you have nothing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or um, oh, you know what um helped me with my um spinal taps? Is um I recorded a video of when it was over for my past self so when I could watch it in the future so I wouldn't be scared. Well, that's a really good idea. Did you think of that on your own?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02Not did you?
SPEAKER_05I can't remember. I think because uh it's over, he's like, Oh, that wasn't so bad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I wasn't so bad because I got like $300. Yeah.
Keri CroftWell, that makes it a lot better. That makes it a lot better. So, how has you know having cancer so young, now that you're the ripe old age of 12?
SPEAKER_0211.
Keri CroftEleven. How's it affected you? How are you different? Do you notice anything about yourself in terms of like do you have more perspective?
SPEAKER_02Yes. Um, I can't run as fast as I used to. Um, I can't do a lot of things that I used to be able to do. Is yeah.
SPEAKER_05But how do you think that your experience of treat it like beating cancer changed kind of how you look at the world?
Keri CroftLike mentally, do you feel like you have a little more wisdom, a little more perspective than your average 11-year-old?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
Keri CroftLike when you see kids whining and complaining about trifling trivial things, are you like kind of like being like that's just having a cold? People are allowed to have colds and be bummed about it. No. Miss Penelope, I think you're gonna be upset if you watch this back and you didn't say one word. You're gonna be like, why didn't I make a peep? I didn't say anything.
SPEAKER_02Panel say, just say, just say um just say I'm a peanut. No. What you said something? You said something.
Keri CroftAll right. Tell
After Cancer, Perspective, And The Rally
Keri Croftme, okay, so let's move on to something more important. What's the what's what's hot with music? Like what do you listen to?
SPEAKER_02My dad's songs.
Keri CroftSo what's the name of his Oh Echo Hawk?
SPEAKER_02Oh god. We should play a song. It wouldn't be a copyright.
Keri CroftHold on. We're gonna play some. We're gonna look.
SPEAKER_02How do you spell it, Penelope?
SPEAKER_05Oh, it's E K K O Hawk. But he's in a rock band. He's a singer. Oh yeah, that's awesome. So Max really loves Max and Penelope. They both really love his band.
SPEAKER_02He can make really funny voices. He can. He can do Chewbacca.
Keri CroftYeah. There's only one, it's only showing one.
SPEAKER_05One song?
Keri CroftOh yeah, this is one.
SPEAKER_05It's a good one.
SPEAKER_02Is this copyright?
unknownNo.
Keri CroftI like these colors.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he does. Is that Neance Guy's guys? He's a really good drawer.
SPEAKER_05That's Neance Guys, yeah.
SPEAKER_02He could draw a lion with wings very well right now. Wait, what was this song for?
SPEAKER_05What song? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Walk-up song or something? His voice is in the thing. Yeah. It's like he does.
SPEAKER_05Are you like a groupie? Yeah. My husband's a rock. When I first met him, uh definitely I listened to their album at the time over and over again. But they were, when I met him, they were He has a great voice. Yes. He does. What's his name? Brent.
Keri CroftBrent. Come on in here. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, yeah. His first name's Jeffrey, but he goes by Brent.
Keri CroftWill he do like an acoustic like something?
SPEAKER_05Well, he doesn't. Well, he, I mean, he can sort of play the guitar and other instruments, but they could do the four of I mean, you know, come on in. Or just him and like some acoustic.
Keri CroftLike, yeah, I've done that before.
SPEAKER_05They I'm sure they'd love it. Yeah. His uh best friend is a guitar player. They've been friends longer than we've known each other. Echo come to come in.
SPEAKER_02Like Josh. Yeah, Josh and Terry. Terry and Derek.
SPEAKER_05They practice at our house, so the kids are they're buds. That's awesome.
Keri CroftAll with all of them. That's great. Yeah. So, Kim, final words for the mom out there going through it. Yeah. Feels alone. Why me?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
Keri CroftWhy my family?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um, and it you will get to the other side and you will look back and wonder how in the world, how did you do it? I'm talking. Shh. Like, how how did you how'd you make it through? But you just, you just do it. You move forward because you have to. I just, you like my family would ask me, like, how are you, how are you doing it? How are you getting through it? And it's just because I have no other choice. You just you push through because you have to.
SPEAKER_02Shh. Hold on. The really annoying part is when everybody in your family, like everybody else in your family, you're like, oh, they have good blood white blood cells, and they're like, or um, what is it, A and C. Yeah, like, and they're like, what is that?
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. Having to just kind of repeat what everything means over and over again. But you know, we're really close to it. And they're just they're kind of on the yeah, they're on the outside. And she does every once she always asks, he's still in remission, right? I'm like, Mom, yes, since like for the past year, yes, he's been in remission. Right. But why is he still getting treatment? I'm like, oh, you know. But but anyway, to answer your question, you just push through, you can get to the other side, and uh you know, just hope the best for your family while you're doing it.
SPEAKER_02I think the best part of it is make a wish, definitely.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And be and just try to find as much joy as you possibly can. And because we have definitely had a lot of uh moments of joy through treatment, you know, uh just from the blue jackets and all of the experiences you've gotten with them. Uh make a wish.
SPEAKER_02What else?
SPEAKER_05You got to meet Mechie. What else? John Mechie and the Texans. You tell me, bro. What else? I mean, it is gonna be I think that there's been a lot of reasons to celebrate. Scot we went to Scotland while I was in treatment. That was a lot of joy.
SPEAKER_02No, we got like a hundred jelly cats. Two five, three. Five. She got five. Three. No, I exactly remember.
SPEAKER_05She can tell you exactly what ones she got there and where she got them. Yeah, which ones you get.
SPEAKER_01So I got the pink lady in Scotland, and then the octopus, and the wiener dog I got in London.
SPEAKER_02You got one more.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_02You got one more. Buddy, she can go through all of her jelly cats and tell you where she got them. We got three in London, remember?
